What you actually get paid on a marketplace sale

Enter the listing price and the fees your marketplace charges. The payout figure is what reaches your bank account; the profit figure subtracts your product cost and the VAT you owe on the sale.

How this is calculated

Commission is taken on the gross listing price, which is how most marketplaces bill it. VAT is backed out of the same gross figure, so the VAT line is what you collected on behalf of the tax office rather than income. Profit is payout minus that VAT minus your product cost. Input VAT on your own purchases is not deducted here — if you reclaim it, your real profit is higher.

Questions

Is commission charged on the shipping amount too?
On most marketplaces commission applies to the amount the buyer pays, and if shipping is billed to the buyer it sits inside that amount. Check your own fee schedule, then put the buyer-facing total in the listing price field.
Why is my profit lower than the margin I planned?
Usually the fixed service fee and the shipping you absorb. Both are flat amounts, so they eat a much larger share of a low-priced item than a high-priced one.
Does this handle returns?
No. A return usually costs you the outbound shipping plus the return leg, and commission refunds vary by marketplace. Model your return rate separately and subtract it from the profit line.
